This Sub-Group is very active across a wide range of aspects of food production and avoidance of food waste. It’s aim is to encourage and facilitate the growing and use of plants, fruits and produce through community education and participation
If you wish to get involved in this group and/or have ideas for projects you would like to see progressed, then please contact us to discuss.
The group has owned a community fruit press and fruit crusher for a number of years, and have held a number of popular community apple pressing events held every Autumn in Hythe High Street. The events are a big hit with families as combined fun and education.
For many years now we have held a number of events each year (Spring and Autumn, usually) to allow our community (gardeners, allotment holders, anybody) to swap surplus seeds, plants and produce.
These are always held in the Hythe town centre – either under the Town Hall, or on Town Square (on the High Street side of Aldi)
The purpose is to allow both the exchange of seeds, plants and produce, but also of information. Everybody attending will know something that can help somebody else – siting, planting, harvesting or preserving.
The purpose is to the exchange, so we do not charge to bring, swap or otherwise take part – and to foster a stronger community spirit.
Look out for notices of the events – in good time to allow you to plan how to take part.

We are expecting to offer the opportunity to learn techniques for preserving fruit and vegetables throughout the year – this could include jams and chutneys as well as drying or other techniques.
Timing will depend on the availability of local seasonal produce.
Format will be a small group, hosted by the “tutor” who will demonstrate the relevant technique.
Look out for notices inviting participation – first come, first served.
We will also expect to post seasonal recipes using wild produce – which will hopefully be helpful and take you in directions you had not expected!
There are many things that upset us at HECG and one is FOOD WASTE. Gleaning is the act of collecting leftover crops from farmers’ fields after they have been commercially harvested or on fields where it is not economically profitable to harvest. (Wikipedia)
