Visit to Electronic Waste Recycling Plant
July 20, 2022 @ 11:00 am - 3:30 pm
Electrical Goods Recycling Plant (SWEEP) Visit:
20th July 11.00 – approx 3.00
A visit to SWEEP at Sittingbourne (we will arrange car sharing where possible) to look at the electrical goods recycling. If a device has a plug or uses batteries, it can be recycled here, at no cost to Kent taxpayers. We’ll hear about the business model, the challenges and opportunities, and then see the recycling in action as we take a tour of the plant. Lunch will be provided.
The event will be limited to 12 people.

Over the next months we are planning to follow up with a series of visits and a talk to enable a better understanding of “What happens to Kent’s waste”, how it is managed and where and how it is processed. It is a fascinating and complex picture, not least with recycling rates having plateaued.
Events being planned are:
- A visit to the “Waste to Energy” (aka incinerator) at Allington, which accounts for around half of all household waste.
- A visit to the garden and food waste facility at Blaise Farm.
- A talk from our former Kent County Councillor and HECG chair, Martin Whybrow, giving an overview of the topic, explaining what goes where, what actually gets recycled, what ends up in landfill, and what goes up in smoke.
